Level: Lexile 740; Interest Level 2-6

Fiction/NF: Non-Fiction

Book Introduction (Before Reading)

Students will be in pre-determined groups of 4-5 students according to their DRA Levels. I will call one group at a time to the reading table.  "Group 4 will you please come to the table."
I will start by handing the book out to each student and introduce the book.

  • "Whats the title of this book?" - Nature's Power
  • "Very good! Now what do you predict this book is about after looking at the cover of it?" It is about Nature and how powerful the forces of nature are and how it changes our surroundings.
  • "Good! What are some of the text features you notice?" Contents, glossary, index, chapters headings, etc.

Phonics Focus: (CC): Literacy-RF.2.3.D; Decode words with common prefixes and suffixes.
(Students will have prior knowledge of prefixes and suffixes)

  • "What is are some examples of suffixes?" -ing, -ed, -est, -er
  • "What are some examples of a prefix?" re-, un-, dis-
  • "Why would a prefix or a suffix be added to a word?"
  • "Look through the book and see if there are any words with a prefix or a suffix." "What              are they?"

Phonics Word work Activity: Sorting prefixes, root words and suffixes

Students will pair up in partners of two and I will hand each group a paper plate and a bag with pre-cut words. The bag will contain root words, prefixes, and suffixes and the students will sort them. I will give them approximately 4-6 minutes to sort the words and we will go over them quickly.

Vocabulary Focus: I will have the vocabulary words written on a white board and for each word the students will try to find the word in the text and using the context clues and pictures to try to figure out what the word means if they do not already know. After we will go back to the glossary and read the definitions of each vocabulary word.

Vocab Word Work Activity: After we identify all the vocabulary words and their definitions I will have 8 sentences written on the board with a missing vocab word. I will read a sentence aloud 1 at a time and the students will identify what vocabulary word should go in the blank.

Vocabulary Words: avalanche, erupt, geyser, magma, sinkhole, tsunami, glacier, pumice

Before we start reading I will remind the students to pay attention and look for words with prefixes, suffixes, and to look for our vocabulary words.

During Reading

  • Students will take turns reading one page of the book at a time.
    • "Jill, will you start reading aloud Chapter 1 on page 3."
  • Comprehension Non-Fiction
    • Main Idea/Details
        • "What is the main idea of what we have read?"
        • "What are two forces of nature?"
        • "What details do we know about water and ice?"
        • "What details do we know about wind?"
    • Fluency and Phrasing
      • While the students are reading I will remind them to read so the students can hear them, to read with expression and at a steady rate so the other students can understand them.
    • Word Decoding
      • Re-read and think what would make sense
        • I will have students re-read when they make a mistake and have them think about what would make sense. Remind them to use context clues to help them if they have trouble.

    After Reading

After reading the text I will go a short review with the students and discuss what the book  was about. Then students will participate in a writing activity. Each student will get 5 post its. I will ask the students 5 questions about the book and they will write their response on their post it.

    "What is the strongest windstorm?"
"A very quick flooding is what type of flooding?"
"What are tornadoes that form over lakes or oceans are called what?"
"What do scientist use to measure the strength of an earthquake's wave?"
